Disney Eyeing a Reboot of Pirates of the Caribbean

It seems that Disney is already on the track to reboot the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise after only 14 years and five films.

According to Deadline, the studio has reached out to the writers of the Deadpool films, Rhett Reese & Paul Wernick, to take a crack at coming up with something new. Jerry Bruckheimer will stay on as a producer, but no word as of yet if this reboot will include Johnny Depp or not.

The series has earned $4.5 billion globally, so it’s no surprise Disney wants to keep it alive, but will a reboot work this early into the lifespan of the series? Depp is so closely associated with the films it may not be that easy for the studio to get movie audiences to accept anything new.

My thinking is maybe you do something adjacent. Make it a mini-universe. There were other pirates, why not tell some of their stories?

We’ll just have to wait and see.
