Flash Gordon looks set to grace movie screens yet again.
Fox has been trying to put together a new project for some time now, but a new director has come on board to possibly breathe some life into it. Julius Avery (Son of a Gun) has been tapped with the duty of launching a new take on the matinee hero.
What I found really funny about this story is that almost everyone ran pictures of the 1980 film. Gordon dates back as far as 1934 and has been a Saturday matinee series, comic books, cartoons and so on. The 1980 incarnation was just one take on him, and one that is remembered more for its camp value than anything else. It is highly likely a new take on the character won’t go the same route.
Through various versions of the story, it always ends with Flash Gordon ending up stranded on the world Mongo with Dale Arden and Dr. Hans Zasrkov. There they end up fighting against the evil tyrant Ming the Merciless and trying to free those he controls.
While the film is moving forward it will be interesting to see what happens once the Disney acquisition of Fox is complete. Disney has a mixed history with launching sci-fi fare. (Yes, we’re looking at you John Carter.)
Avery is hot right now thanks to his upcoming horror film Overlord which currently sits at 88 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. Apparently, his pitch won over the execs at Fox and that certainly has me curious.
