Watching my second Fyre Festival documentary of the week… this… it gets weirder with every minute of footage I watch.
No Name HBO Host decided to double-down on his completely baseless attack on comic books.
As this is not his YouTube channel and won’t help his SEO, I’ll actually embed it and let you hear him for yourself.
“But talk about making my point for me: Yeah, I don’t know very much about Stan Lee and it certainly wasn’t a swipe at Stan Lee,” Maher said, with King interjecting, “You would have liked him. He was a really nice guy.”
Maher continued, “Yeah, fine. I am agnostic on Stan Lee. I don’t read comic books. I didn’t even read them when I was a child. What I was saying is, a culture that thinks that comic books and comic book movies are profound meditations on the human condition is a dumb fucking culture. And for people to get mad at that just proves my point.”
We’ll just gloss over in his original post he said he did read comics “now and then,” and now says he didn’t read them. I’m not here to argue semantics. But what this actually does is not prove his point. It shows why it is dangerous to speak with any sort of authoritative nature on a topic that you don’t even have a rudimentary understanding of.
Let us say I decided to speak about the intricacies of underwater basket weaving and how it is a clear sign of a society that has lost its way. Would you not suspect that I had some experience with underwater basket weaving? I mean, I’m speaking about it as a signpost for my entire society, so clearly I understand it.
Okay, what if I told you I had never even attempted underwater basket weaving? Would you not have to wonder what in the world even made me think that I should talk on the topic?
I’ve seen the defenses of his position and I just have to shake my head. You just simply don’t attack something you don’t at least have a working knowledge of. At that point you are only able to speak in the broadest of terms and it does nothing but make you look a fool.
“He’s a satirist! You don’t get satire!” Maybe I don’t. What I do get, however, is being a know it all loud mouth about a topic you have absolutely no familiarity with to just be an asshat.
