Johnny Depp Quietly Sails Out of Pirates of the Caribbean

After months of rumors, it does seem that Disney and Johnny Depp will be parting ways when it comes to the Pirates of the Caribbean films.

The Hollywood Reporter did a wide-ranging interview with Sean Bailey, Disney’s head of films, and nestled in there was an answer to a looming question: Would Johnny Depp play Capt. Jack Sparrow again? It seems that he won’t.

Here is the exact passage.

You’ve hired Deadpool scribes Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick to work on a possible Pirates of the Caribbean reboot. Can Pirates survive without Johnny Depp?

We want to bring in a new energy and vitality. I love the [Pirates] movies, but part of the reason Paul and Rhett are so interesting is that we want to give it a kick in the pants. And that’s what I’ve tasked them with.

More is sure to be made of this over the next few years, but it does seem after billions of dollars at the box office that it’s just over. And I get it, but you would hope there might be something a bit more formal down the road. We’ll just have to wait and see.

All that being said, I do think the character has run his course and I’m ready to move on from him. Lets get down with some new scallywags.
