James Gunn returns to Marvel

This is the third time I have written this news today. First, it was for The Nerdy, and then for Batman-News. Even though I’ve already tackled this from a few angles, I’m just simply so baffled this happen that it’s worth addressing again.

For those that’s don’t recall, Gunn was let go by Marvel Studios last summer over some old tweets that had resurfaced. Disney released him and he would no longer be directing Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. The cast even spoke out about their displeasure over this turn of events.

Then in January, it was announced that Gunn would be writing and directing The Suicide Squad for Warner Bros., seemingly putting a cap on the whole Marvel again.

Now comes the news that Gunn is indeed coming back to Marvel. Apparently, Walt Disney Studios president Alan Horn met with Gunn multiple times over the tweets, and he was finally satisfied enough to reverse the firing.

Of course, this leaves everyone in an odd predicament now as Gunn had signed on to another film… for Marvel’s competitor. Fear not, though, the new deal with Marvel calls for Gunn to not begin work on Guardians until he completes The Suicide Squad. That film is due to hit theaters on Aug. 6, 2021, so it’s probably going to 2023 before we see the Guardians film.

It just boggles my mind Disney admits it overreacted. Good for them, but still amazing. And in the end, for all of the drama and headaches, I think we’re going to end up with two amazing films that I can’t wait to see.
