My friend Rachel is evil for pointing this song out to me. Evil woman.

(and yes, I know the lyrics about men, but it still fits)

“Single” – Natasha Bedingfield

Ah yeah that’s right
All you single people out there
This is for you

I’m not waitin’ around for a man to save me
(Cos I’m happy where I am)
Don’t depend on a guy to validate me
(No no)
I don’t need to be anyone’s baby
(Is that so hard to understand?)
No I don’t need another half to make me whole

Make your move if you want doesn’t mean I will or won’t
I’m free to make my mind up you either got it or you don’t

[Chorus:]
This is my current single status
My declaration of independence
There’s no way I’m tradin’ places
Right now a star’s in the ascendant

I’m single
(Right now)
That’s how I wanna be
I’m single
(Right now)
That’s how I wanna be

Ah yeah Uh Huh that’s right

Don’t need to be on somebody’s arm to look good
(I like who I am)
I’m not saying I don’t wanna fall in love ‘cos I would
I’m not gonna get hooked up just ‘cos you say I should
(Can’t romance on demand)
I’m gonna wait so I’m sorry if you misunderstood

[Chorus]

Everything in it’s right time everything in it’s right place
I know I’ll settle down one day
But ’til then I like it this way it’s my way
Eh I like it this way

Make your move if you want doesn’t mean I will or won’t
I’m free to make my mind up you either got it or you don’t
‘Til then I’m single

This is my current single status
My declaration of independence
There’s no way I’m tradin’ places
Right now a star’s in the ascendant

Happiness is your lovely new iPod Mini“>iPod mini, playing a brand new album by one of your all time favorite Two Tone bands, Madness. Even though it is not due out for a few weeks yet, I have Dangermen Sessions Vol 1 on my player now, and all is right with the world. *contented sigh*

Must…stop…playing…with…shiny…new…iPod
(in case you are wondering, I got a blue 6 GB mini)

In other news, a friend (thank you mittens83!) introduced me to AllOfMP3.com, it is a music site out of Russia with just INSANELY cheap MP3s! All legal to boot. You can read about them in this Wikipedia entry.

The Sex Pistols
Old school punk! You just say what you have to say
regardless of what everyone else thinks!
You’re one of my most favourite types of
music… You’re raw and uncut! You’re
surrounded by hype…just don’t let it make you
go insane…

What genre of rock are you?

Wow…you know, I thought ripping all my CDs to MP3s would be a fairly quick process as I sould about 75% of my CD collection off a few years ago. I figured a couple days at most.

Week 3 is coming to an end.

As it stands I have ripped around 4500 songs. If I was to start my iTunes, and just let it go, it would run for 11 days, 19 hours, 49 minutes and 53 seconds. It stands at 19.1 gigabytes of memory used.

What was I thinking when I ever bought this many CDs over the years? Was I insane? And as I listen to some of the music as I rip it, I clearly was! Sure, I am rediscovering some bands I hadn’t listened to in ages (Madness…how I love thee). I am also discovering some people released WAY too much music (Prince…do you ever sleep?). Also, no more buying a CD for just one song (darn you Wall of Voodoo for “Mexican Radio“!)

Now comes backing this up! I thought about just using CD-ROMs, but my poor CD drive sounds like it is dying from this much use. So I ordered a 300 gigabyte external hard drive so I could just back up my whole hard drive at once.

There is an upside to this though, I am selling off more of my CDs that I don’t feel a burning urge to keep the originals (adios to a whole lot of Tori Amos CD singles!).

Course, I really need to sell some off to pay for a new cd-rom drive and that external hard drive….

My Mother and I purchased XM Radio for my Father for Christmas. At the same time I got myself the online account so I could at least listen to the music channels. All I can say is I love it. I must admit that I stay on Fungus 53, the Ska/Punk/Hardcore station 99% of the time, but man do I love it!

I am espicially addicted to the show on at 6 PM EST called “Hee Haw Hell”, a 1/2 hour of psycho billy, rockabilly and cow punk….how can you not love that? Today’s episode alone featured Dash Rip Rock, Hillbilly Cafe, Mojo Nixon & Skid Roper, Groovie Ghoulies, Demented Are Go, Nashville Pussy, Southern Culture On The Skids, Hot Stuff and The Cramps! COME ON! That is one solid 1/2 hour of rock!

So anyway, you can get a free 3 day trial if you want by heading here. Come on…it’s worth it just for Hee Haw Hell!:)

They say that Bing Crosby’s White Christmas is one of the top sellling singles of all time. Has anyone ever wondered though how many copies of that song they sell in the SOUTHERN hemisphere? You know, considering it’s their Summer during Christmas.

Maybe it’s just me, but I think in general that music quality has gone to pot. Where I used to be 2 -3 cd’s a WEEK it is amazing if I buy 2 – 3 a YEAR now. And for the record, nope, I’m not downloading it either.

Let me give you an example, years before Ska was the rage and every band with a horn section got signed, I had been skanking up the dance floor. When the Ska boom hit and there were a gajillion bands being signed, there were still some gems amongst all the crud. Take No Doubt for instance, a decent band with heavy Ska influences, but not 100% ska by any stretch of the imagination. With each passing album though I have become more and more discouraged with their sound. And this latest album…ugh. First song out “Hey Baby!” wasn’t bad, so I admit I randomly downloaded 2 other songs from the album to sample (which is something I *do* do…I download to listen to before deciding to buy the album). Hated both songs and then deleted the files. Now, is what I did illegal? I don’t think so. I did not use it as an alternative means to buying, I used it as a means to make what I feel is a wiser music buying choice. To me that is no different than listening to the radio. Certainly I realize there are numerous people using downloading as a complete replacement to CD purchasing, but for me it is a matter of saving my money from bad purchases. (and to anyone reading this, again I state, I download, sample the song once or twice to decide if I like it and then DELETE the file. I do not not keep the files or trade them with other users. I don’t need any lawsuits:))

But this is just one example of many I have. In general I can not stand the music being made today whether it be top 40 or indy. I found myself doing something I never saw myself doing…Listening to classical on a daily basis. Somedays though I go wild and listen to music made up to about 1995 at the latest, but anything after that…I simply can not find anything worth listening to.

The music industry has been very quick to blame music downloading for all their woes, but I think perhaps they also need to be looking in their own house for some problems. Soaring prices, poor quality and a general sense of “Who really cares about the consumer” attitude is also contributing to their current state of problems.

I remember when I was younger I would buy 2 ? 3 music CDs a week. Over the years my interest started to dwindle from a combination reasons, mainly pricing increases and what I saw as the general decline in quality of the music I was hearing.

If you ask the music industry, they will tell you I am no longer buying CDs because I am apparently downloading all the music illegally off the web. Well if you search my hard drive you will find a couple of MP3?s, but not many. You will most definitely not found any current music though. If I don?t want a piece music, even as an illegally downloaded MP3, why would anyone think I want to pay $18 to buy it on CD?

While I am encouraged by what I have read in the news today, I still don?t see the music industry saving itself. Musicians are being wildly overpaid and it is time that the record companies stop asking us, the general public, to pay these outrageous sums by charging us outrageous prices. I will not argue that the rise in internet downloading has hurt sales of CDs, but it is almost a ?which came first situation?. Are sales hurt because of the downloading, or has the rise in downloading been caused by the over-the-top prices we have been asked to pay?

At least we can say one thing is, at least we aren?t the highest priced country for CDs. Pick up a new Jpop CD in Japan sometime?.3500 Yen. As of this moment, that would be $29.97.

I think if you tied Madonna in chains, put her in a casket and sank her in the ocean she would STILL find ways to get everyone to talk about her! While I am not her biggest fan in the world (her musics ok, I just don’t do backflips over it), I have to tip my hat to her marketing genius. She never fails to get people talking about her.

I read one article
today saying how it appeared Madonna’s performance with Brittany Spears and
Christina Aguilera was “symbolic of her handing the torch to the younger
stars.” Excuse me? Did you see the same performance as I did? Brittany and Christina were nothing more than Madonna’s back up singers! Let’s see…She has Brittany dispose of her top hat, then Christina has to take her coat, and then they spend the rest of the performance flanking Madonna…sorry, but that is not “passing the torch”. To me that was more “Let me show you kiddies how the adults do it.” Trust me folks, Madonna is a LONG way from passing the torch to anyone, and especially the likes of Brittany or Christina.

Why am I even writing about this? I have no clue.
