Alini Brito, one of the two teachers in the infamous James Madison High School lesbian scandal, is now suing to regain her job.

Back in Dec. 2009 I wrote up the story of Alini Brito and Cindy Mauro and how they had been discovered in a vacant classroom at James Madison High School by a janitor in what he described as an act of lesbian sex.

While both women denied the allegations, the school board found them guilty and let both of them go.

Normally this would be the end of the story, but it appears that Brito is suing the school for wrongful termination, and she’s demanding her job back.  The reason?  Mauro was doing nothing more than helping her with a diabetic attack.

WCBS and The New York Daily News have reported on the lawsuit filing, and it appears that the whole thing was a misunderstanding.  Brito had begun feeling ill during a school assembly, and Mauro offered her some candy that she had back in her classroom.  When the two got back to the room, Brito took to feeling worse, and asked to lay down on the floor.  She took off her sweater so that Mauro could place it under her head, and then her feet were placed up on a chair to help with her circulation.

It was sometime around this point when the janitor happened upon them and found Brito naked from the waist up and Mauro between her legs.

This has all been explained now by it all appearing to have only allegedly been a misunderstanding, and was nothing more than a case of one teacher helping another with a diabetic attack.

My issue with Brito, however, is two-fold.  I’ve known some diabetics in my life, and not one of them ever said to me, “I need to get these clothes off” (yes, perhaps a pillow, but still … eh) and neither did any of them say they needed to get their legs up for circulation.  True, everyone is different, but that still seems a tad odd to me.

Secondly, the school board had an investigation of the incident, and they found you both guilty.  I understand they aren’t a court of law, but there was obviously something to the charges for them to terminate you both.  Have you somehow miraculously just come up with new evidence that you somehow did not share with the school when it first mattered?  That’s … odd.

Again, nothing has been proven as of yet, and this is just a whole lot of allegations flying around, but something definitely does not make sense to me in all of this.

At least they didn’t involve any of the students if something really did happen between them.

Two Brooklyn teachers that were found naked in an empty classroom during a school talent show are going to be charged by the school district with misconduct.

Back in Dec. 2009, 30-year-old Alini Brito and Cindy Mauro, 34-years-old, were removed from their teaching positions at  James Madison High School in Midwood, Brooklyn.  The reason was that in Nov of that year, a janitor found both language teachers in an empty classroom engaged in sexual activity while all of the students were attending a talent show.

Although both teachers have denied the allegations, the New York Daily News is reporting that an investigation conducted by the Department of Education has concluded that the teachers are guilty, and they are both now subject to punishment. Spokeswoman Margie Feinberg said “They face disciplinary action,” but would not elaborate any further on what that might entail.

This school has been rocked by multiple sex scandals in just the past few months, earning it the nickname of “Horndog High.”  The Brito-Mauro scandal was but the first, so nice that some sort of conclusion has finally been reached.

Sarah L. Tolzien, a former English teacher and cross country coach at Rich South High School in Richton Park, IL, has been sued over the affair she had with a then 16-year-old student.

This is a new twist to the teacher student sex scandals.  Last March I brought you the story of Sarah L. Tolzien who had been accused of having sex twice in Nov. 2008 while she was an English teach and cross country coach.  The accusation was that she had twice given a member of the boy’s cross country team a ride home and reportedly had sex with him.  At the time Ms. Tolzien was 24-years-old, and the student was 16.  In Dec. 2008 Ms. Tolzien resigned from the school district after being put on administrative leave.

The Chicago Sun-Times is now reporting that on Tuesday the boy filed suit as “John Doe” in the Cook County Circuit, seeking at least $50,000 from the Rich Township High School District 227 and former teacher Ms. Tolzien.  The damages are being sought for “intentional infliction of severe emotional distress.”

Neither Ms. Tolzien or the school district have chosen to comment on the lawsuit.

This is the first I have ever heard of such an occurrence in one of these cases, but if he’s successful, I highly doubt it will be the last time.

UPDATE 05/01/10: Sarah L. Tolzien Sentenced

Public schools across the United States are closed for the winter holidays, but apparently not all teachers are done seeing their students.

Amanda Watkins, a 38-year-old mother and teacher at Sheffield Jr. High School in Alabama, has been arrested on second degree rape charges.  According to the Shoals Insider, Ms. Watkins was discovered Saturday night by the police in a vehicle parked near the Covenant Christian school, off of Hwy. 43 in Muscle Shoals.

The officers responded to an alarm at the Christian school, and upon arrival they noticed a car with heavily fogged windows.  When the police approached the car, they discovered Ms. Watkins engaged in sexual activity with a 15-year-old African-American male.  It has now been confirmed the boy was in one of Ms. Watkins’ classes during the 2008 – 2009 school year.

Ms. Watkins has been placed on administrative leave from teaching 8th grade English and reading classes pending this investigation.  Although, it has been reported that Ms. Watkins has made a full confession, this has not yet been confirmed by an official source on the record.

She has been charged with sodomy and rape in the second degree, which is a class B felony and carries a sentence of 2-20 years imprisonment.  Upon her release she would be monitored and required to register as a sex offender.

Ms. Watkins has been released from jail on $15,000 bond.

Well, for once the teachers were at least not going after the students, instead,they were going after each other.

According to The New York Daily News (NYDC)  33-year-old married teacher Alini Brito was found with 29-year-old teacher Cindy Mauro in an empty classroom during a school talent show at  James Madison High School in Midwood, Brooklyn by a janitor.  While being in a classroom wasn’t so odd, it was the fact they were both naked.

The janitor reported the two tenured teachers to school authorities and they have been reassigned pending an investigation by the board of education.  Ms. Brito’s husband was reached for comment by NYDC, and he reportedly denied that any accusation have been brought against his wife.

The initial report is lacking in many more details except for comments from students that imply that Ms. Brito tends to dress more like a teenage girl than a teacher, and is quite flirtatious.  As for Ms. Mauro, they say she tends to be more reserved and conservative.

While this differs from the other teacher sex scandals I usually cover, if true, it is just another sign of people not using their brains.  The school is full of students, in an assembly or not, and you would choose to have sex in a classroom?  True, the NYDC report never blatantly says they were engaged in sexual activity, but it is certainly implied.  What these two women do off school grounds, on their own time, married or not, is their own business.  However, doing something like this in the school with students around is just stupid and irresponsible.

Where has all the good sense gone in the world.  Heck, not even “good” sense, just plain COMMON sense.  Would the average person not think, “Hey, maybe this isn’t such a hot idea to do this in the building where we teach, let alone with our students in the building.”  Apparently those that say common sense has become more uncommon or on to something.

UPDATE 4/5/10: Both teachers have now been found guilty by the Board of Education.

A special education teacher’s aide in Michigan has been arrested for having “sexual relations” with three separate students.

37-year-old Amy Rita Ellsworth has been accused of having sexual relations with three different students at Waterford Mott High School in Waterford, MI.  She was charged this past Thursday with six counts of criminal sexual conduct with students.  These include two 15-year felony counts of third-degree criminal sexual conduct and four life felony counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct.

In short, if convicted, she is facing life in prison.

There was no listing of what evidence was discovered against Ms. Ellsworth in any of the numerous reports on the case.  The only fact that was repeated was that it was with three separate students both on and off school grounds.  She also was not an instructor, but just an aide, something they are going to great lengths to stress.

The problem for the school district is that this is the second employee brought up on sex charges in two weeks.  The earlier one was Brian C. Drake, the district’s theater coordinator, was charged with three counts of third-degree criminal sexual conduct with a student. He is accused of having sex with a female senior during the 2008-2009 in the Waterford Kettering High theater.

Each of Mr. Drake’s felony charges carry a 15-year sentence if convicted.

The Waterford police are said to have begun investing Mr. Drake in September and Ms. Ellsworth in October.

There is something to be said that this problem of school employees having sex with students when it is so out of control that your district has not one, but two investigations going on at the same time.  While I’m sure the two stories are in no way connected, it is just unnerving that the odds of this happening have increased to such a degree that this is even possible.

So glad I don’t have any kids in school.

Well, that didn’t take long.

A mere month after 26-year-old Helen Goddard, a trumpet instructor at the City of London School for Girls, was discovered to be having a sexual relationship with one of her 15-year-old female students, she has been given her sentence.  While I normally don’t do follow ups on the sentencing of the teachers I write about, this one just filled in too many holes to be ignored.

According to the London Evening Standard, it was the teenager who instigated the relationship by first discussing personal issues with the teacher, and then eventually going for coffee together that led to the girl attempting to kiss the older woman.  The girl said in a victim impact statement that she felt remorse for the situations he had gotten the teacher into.

While the original story on Helen Goddard had the parents saying they would have no problem with their daughter eventually reconnecting with Ms. Goddard, they have now taken a much harder line over the situation. The young girls parents are now angry and say that the teacher betrayed their trust.  They also revealed that the girl had been telling them she was staying at a friend’s house when she was sneaking away to see the teacher.  Nothing specific was mentioned on how Ms. Goddard ended up taking the girl to Paris for a weekend to attend a Gay Pride parade, but they somehow managed to pull that off also.

As the evidence was presented, more details of the raid that found the two together was revealed.  When the police went to question Ms. Goddard, they found the girl there also, and confiscated numerous sex toys, including “fluffy handcuffs”.  They also seized the girl’s cell phone which contained one text message from Ms. Goddard that read:

‘It’s going to be a beautiful day. I love you. You were on my mind all night.

With the amount of evidence against her, Ms. Goddard confessed to six sexual encounters with the student between February and July of this year.

Speaking on her own behalf, Ms. Goddard said she had been “pressurised” (yes, she said “pressurised”) into the affair by the young girl.  Seeing as the woman is so much older, Judge Anthony Pitts apparently didn’t care; he sentenced Ms. Goddard to 15-months in jail, she must register as a sex offender for 10 years and she is banned for life from working with children.

Well, it isn’t just teachers in the United States that have inappropriate relationships with their students.

26-year-old Helen Goddard, a trumpet instructor at the City of London School for Girls, was discovered to be having a sexual relationship with one of her 15-year-old female students.

Ms. Goddard, nicknamed “the Jazz Lady” by her students, was a child musical prodigy, and even performed at the opening ceremonies of the Olympics in Sydney, Australia in 2000.  The unnamed girl was a student of hers and they started meeting for coffee after lessons which eventually led to the sexual affair.  Reports indicate that the fair lasted from February to July of this year when another teacher at the school received an anonymous tip to the affair.

After the tip was received, the Headmistress of the school was alerted to the situation and she informed the authorities of the situation.  The police conducted a raid and found the teacher and student together along with an assortment of sexual toys.  Ms. Goddard’s mobile phone was confiscated and text messages of a sexual nature, also known as “sexting”, were found on the teacher’s phone.

Being caught red-handed, Ms. Goddard confessed to the affair.  She went before a judge and plead guilty to six counts of sexual activity with a minor under the age of 16.  (16 is the age of sexual consent in England as opposed to the standard of 18 in the USA)  The judge issued bail and set sentencing for September 21st.  Ms. Goddard faces a maximum sentence of 14 years in prison, and has already been required to register with the sex offender registry.

In an odd twist, the parents of the girl, both reported to be highly educated individuals, say they will have no problem with the relationship if it was to resume once their daughter turns 16.  The date of her birthday was not disclosed.

Ms. Goddard has been suspended from her teaching duties.

UPDATE: Helen Goddard has been sentenced

A new twist to the age-old story of teacher sex scandals where the mother actually knew it was going on.

Maria Guman Hernandez, 32-years-old, has been asked to resign from her position as a sixth-grade teacher at Our Lady of Charity in Hialeah, FL.  The reason is that around May 20th rumors began to circulate that Ms. Hernandez was  having a sexual relationship with a 15-year-old eigth-grader at the school.  Principal Xenia Torres struggled with the idea of reporting the rumor to the Department of Children & Families (DCF).  She was informaed by a school lawyer that they had no choice under Florida law, so they made the call.

While the police sought the teacher for questioning, they had to wait for her to return from a vacation she was taking with the student to Walt Disney World.

During the time where they waited for the pair to return, they spoke with the student’s mother and discovered that she was well aware of the relationship and had approved of it because she felt Hernandez “was a nice enough person and a good influence on her son.”

Upon Ms. Hernandez’s return from the vacation, she was taken into custody and admitted to the relationship after she was read her rights.  The student also admitted to a sexual relationship with the teacher, and he informed the police that the sexual relations began in March of this year and that they used his family apartment for their meetings with his mother’s approval.

The mother has not yet been charged with anything, but that may change as the investigation continues.  On late Wednesday a juvenille judge ruled that the mother could keep custody of both the 15-year-old and her 4-year-old, but she would have to under go counseling, and the two boys would have to be checked for emotional damage.  The court also said that a guardian would have to live in the house for a while to help the mother out, and DCF was authoried to make unannounced visits to check in on how the family was doing.

There is still no word on if Hernandez has resigned, but she did make her bail of $10,000 and is currently out of jail.

A 23-year-old music teacher at Greenfield High School in Greenfield, Missouri has been arrested on allegations that she had a sexual relationship with a student.

Back on May 15th, Alison M. Peck was charged with two counts of statutory rape of a child under the age of 17.  These were followed up on May 18th with charges in a second county and she is now facing statutory rape and sodomy charges.

Reportedly the relationship with the student began in December 2008 via text messages that eventually evolved into sexting, and then became physical in January of this year.  The liaisons were said to have happened in two different counties, and the charges are for statutory rape in Dade County, and statutory rape and sodomy in Lawrence County.

Now, this is where the story takes an odd turn.  I originally passed on covering this story because I had done so many of these lately, and even though this happened in my own state, I showed restraint and passed over it, but then she was arrested again on May 22nd on completely new charges.

After the original charges were filed, Ms. Peck was instructed to have no contact with the student or his family.  On May 15th, two friends of Ms. Peck contacted the 16-year-old boy and arranged for him to meet with her at the American Inn in Springfield, MO for pizza.  The two friends picked up the boy and transported the boy to the arranged meeting spot.  After her friends left, Ms. Peck and the minor were reported to have spent the night at the hotel and engaged in sexual relations.

When authorities learned of the liaison, she was arrested again and charged with one count of statutory rape and her bond in that county was set at $200,000.  Under the new court orders she is to have no contact with the boy or his family, to remain 1,000 feet away from his home and school and to also have no contact with the two friends that assisted her with the May 15th meeting.  She was also ordered not to leave Missouri and had to surrender her passport to the authorities.

In a May 19th interview with KSPR, Ms. Peck’s lawyer, Bob Torp, said the following.

She’s going to cooperate.  We’re going to get to the bottom of this, investigate it.

I want people to understand that she’s a person. She’s not a monster. She’s innocent until proven guilty.

Torp said his client is “doing as well as can be expected. I think that, you know, there’s a certain amount of shock that comes with something like this. It’s just starting to sink in.”

This was of course four days after the reported meeting at the American Inn, and three days before she was arrested again.

A 40-year-old teaching assistant in Durham, NC has been accused of sexual assault on a 10-year-old boy from the school she works at.

Gina Marie Watring, a mother of three,  has been working at Creekside Elementary School since November 2008, and resigned this week when the allegations that she had sex twice in April, on the 10th and 21st.  The student that has been reported to be 10-years-old, but that remains unconfirmed at this time.

The allegations came to light when another student at the shcool found a note between the teacher and student, and turned it over to school officials.  When the school contacted the student’s mother, she informed them that she had warned Ms. Watring to stay away from her son.  This request was made after she had allowed her son to go placed with Ms. Watring, and they had returned late, or she had to call them to learn where they were.

After the school learned the details, they warned Ms. Watring to have no contact with the student, but she was caught the next day sending him a text in the teacher’s lounge at the school.  Upon further investigation, multiple texts were found on the student’s cell phone from the teacher’s aide, and some of the content was described to be of a sexual nature.  A warrant was also issued for computers for them to be searched for other possible contact between the two.

Ms. Watring is currently being held in jail on $100,000 bond.  Her attorney, a friend of the family who was only representing her for her arraignment, did attempt to get it lowered as he said she did not pose a flight risk, but due to her charges being two felonies, the court opted not to lower it.  All of her further appearances in court will be handled by the public defenders office.

A 34-year-old science teacher in Jacksonville,FL has been arrested on allegations she had sex with a 14-year-old student.

Jennifer Marie Collier, a teacher at James Weldon Johnson Middle School in Jacksonville, FL, was arrested this past Monday on allegations that she was having a sexual relationship with one of her 14-year-old students, with the last incident happening as late as last Friday evening.  Apparently after a school field trip, she offered to drive the boy home but instead took him to a Walmart parking lot and engaged in sexual activity with him in her car.

While reports don’t make it clear why the supposed victim began cooperating with the police, he reportedly informed him that he and Ms. Collier had engaged in sexual activity on multiple occasions, both on and off of school property.  He also showed them several emails from the teacher that validated his claims of the activity.

She was charged with sexual battery on a victim under 18, lewd battery and lewd and lascivious conduct.  Due to her position of a custodial role as his teacher, her charges are considered felonies.

Records indicate that Ms. Collier had only been teaching at James Weldon Johnson Middle School for four months.  Prior to this she taught sixth grade science in Fayetteville, North Carolina for two years, and before that she was a pre-kindergarten teacher in Michigan for four years.  The school district has said they will turn the findings of the investigation over to the Professional Practices Commission to see what, if anything, should be done about her teaching certificate.  She has also resigned her position with the school.

This women now joins the roll call of teacher sex scandals for 2009!
