CBS has decided to end some of the annual “will it be renewed?” guessing game a bit early this year.
It’s always a fun time of year when you start wondering if your favorite shows will be on the air the following season, but CBS has already opted to end some of your pain. Today the network went ahead and picked up 18 shows, even giving some of them multi-year orders. Those returning for the 2012-2013 season are:
2 Broke Girls
48 Hours Mystery
60 Minutes
Amazing Race
The Big Bang Theory (multi-year)
Blue Bloods
Criminal Minds
CSI
The Good Wife
Hawaii Five-0
How I Met Your Mother (multi-year)
The Mentalist
Mike & Molly
NCIS
NCIS: Los Angeles
Person of Interest
Survivor
Undercover Boss
Two and a Half Men is in “preliminary discussions,” and no decisions have been made yet on CSI:NY, CSI: Miami, Unforgettable and A Gifted Man.
Seeing as CBS is sitting pretty as the top rated network, it isn’t too surprising that the network plans to keep the vast majority of its shows going for another season. Why mess with success? Of course, as NBC learned after its dominance in the 80s and 90s, if you don’t start cultivating some fresh shows, you find yourself with no hits when those old race horses go out to pasture.
Stay tuned through out the spring for all of the renewals, cancellations and what new abominations the networks will try to keep us watching.
TV Guide has released a scorecard for which TV shows are renewed, likely to return and on the bubble for the Fall 2011 season.
Overall there aren’t a whole lot of surprises on here, but there are some head scratchers also. For instance, don’t take the Two and a Half Men renewal too seriously as it has been reported the show will be axed should Charlie Sheen fail to return from his current stint in rehab. Or CSI:NY for instance. My gut feeling is even though it isn’t looking healthy, if CBS wants to keep the other two, they have to take the third in a packaged deal.
I will say this, as it stands now, it does not look like a whole lot will be changing for next year, so those currently prepping pilots for 2011, I wouldn’t get your hopes too high.
