Puss in BootsApparently people who missed going to the theaters last weekend due to the weather made up for it this weekend by keeping last week’s top contender rolling in the catnip.

Falling a mere 3.1% from last weekend, Puss in Boots brought in another $33 million. This is probably a little bit of an oddity due to the weather, but hey, when you set a new record, you set a new record for the smallest drop ever for a wide release.

The new Ben Stiller comedy Tower Heist came in second with $25.1 million, a lower than usual opening for one of his movies, and definitely lower for Eddie Murphy, his costar.

Stoner comedies might be falling in popularity somewhat judging by the performance of A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas, coming in below Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay, and seeing as 95% of the attendance was at 3D locations, that means attendance was even lower due to the higher ticket prices.  The true story will be told in the coming weeks.

Paranormal Activity 3 came in fourth with another $8.5 million bringing the domestic gross to $95.3 off of a $5 million dollar budget.  That puts it only $12 million behind the original film, and it seems like it could easily surpass it.

In Time, the new Justin Timberlake action vehicle , slipped into fifth place with $7.7 million, not leaving thins to hopeful this ending up being a big film. I can’t say I’m overly surprised.

The only big release for next weekend is J. Edgar, so don’t expect to see too many changes in the line up of what folks are going to see.

Puss in BootsAn unseasonably early snow storm in the upper northeast put a damped on the box office this weekend, but that couldn’t keep the first spin off film from the Shrek series from scoring a nice chunk of change.

Snow in the northeast kept the box office receipts a bit lower than expected this weekend, but Puss in Boots, the first spin off film from the Shrek series still brought in around $33 million this weekend.

Falling to second place with a 64% slide was Paranormal Activity 3 with $19 million.  This brings its domestic total to $81 million, and considering the $5 million dollar budget, I would hazard to guess we can expect a Paranormal Activity 4 in our futures.

The new Justin Timberlake action vehicle In Time came in third with a pretty soft $12 million.  Not too surprising to be honest, the trailers read much more as a home viewing experience to me than a must see in the theaters.

Footloose feel to fourth place with $5.5 million bringing its cumulative total to $38.5 million. Off of a $24 million budget this film is still clearly in the red, and it isn’t looking too good for making it to the black during its theatrical run.

Rounding out the top five was the new Johnny Depp film, The Rum Diary, once again proving that not everything he touches turns to gold.

This week sees everything going heavy on comedy with the release of A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas and Tower Heist.

Justin Timberlake returned for his fourth time hosting Saturday Night Live, and, yes, the “Dick In A Box” guys came back for this third video.

Last time Timberlake was on SNL, we got “Mother Lover“, a sequel to the original “Dick in a Box” sketch.  Andy Samberg and Timberlake were spotted earlier this week filming a scene with Susan Sarandon and Patricia Clarkson, pretty much guaranteeing us a third video of these characters who are apparently stuck in the 1990′s.

Joining in on the fun this time was the episode’s musical guest, Lady Gaga.  While I didn’t find it quite as funny as the previous two installments, after multiple viewings it has definitely grown on me.  I present you with, 3-Way (The Golden Rule).

(please note: this video is sure to be going up and down for a while, I will continue to replace it as often as I can for viewers outside of the United States)

Even though I don’t get out to the movie theater as often as I would like, I’m always checking out trailers for upcoming films.  The other day I checked out one for No Strings Attached, starring Ashton Kutcher and Natalie Portman.  Not my usual cup of tea, but though I’d give it a look any way.

Cute, but insanely predictable from the trailer, I’m sure I’ll skip its Jan. 21st, 2011 release.

I didn’t give the movie another thought, went on about my life, and then another trailer popped up that made me go, “Didn’t I already watch a trailer about this?” No, wait, this one has Mila Kunis and Justin Timberlake in it … and it’s titled Friends With Benefits … wait a minute … (slightly not safe for work due to language)

Is it just me, or are these not nearly the exact same movie? Oh, wait, I see the difference! Friends With Benefits comes out on July 22nd, 2011! My bad.

This isn’t nearly the first time this has happened in Hollywood, and it’s sure to not be the last, but come on.  These two are so obviously the same movie, and even appear to have very similar settings that it is actually a bit appalling.  Did no one think we would notice?  I mean, you released your trailers in the same week for crying out loud!

For the record, I actually chuckled at the Friends With Benefits trailer, not so much at No Strings Attached.

If there was ever any question about whether or not Hollywood has run out of ideas, I think it’s just been answered for you.

P.S. – How does That 70′s Show play into this since Ashton and Mila played a couple on that show?  Hmm … the plot thickens!

I think I had heard something about Yogi Bear being in development, and then promptly forgot it on purpose.

Starring Dan Aykroyd as the voice of Yogi Bear, and Justin Timberlake as Boo Boo, this … movie … hits theaters this December in 3D.  I know that Alvin and the Chipmunks was a success, and Garfield was a minor success, but Underdog flopped and Marmaduke is pretty much a disaster.  Just watching this trailer, I’m pretty positive we can see which direction this one is going.

Why in the world do these projects keep getting approved?  Do the studios like taking huge gambles?  Whatever, this holds about zero interest for me, but I’m curious to hear what other folks have to say about it.

Another year has come to close, and has become tradition around here, it’s time to take a look at the top 10 posts for the past year.

First off, a huge thank you for the amazing growth this blog experienced this year.  In 2008 I saw growth I didn’t think could be topped with unique visitors growing by almost 600%, and page views growing by almost 700%.  I really didn’t think I could grow much more, but this year saw unique visitors grow by 325% and page views by 293% … I am floored.

My traffic is certainly not in the major leagues by any stretch of the imagination, but for a personal blog, it’s darn good.  I have no clue how I will continue this growth, but we’ll just have to see how things go.

Without further ado, here are the top 10 posts.

Saturday Night Live – Mother Lover – Last year saw the Who Is The Best James Bond? post bring in more traffic than the entire blog did in 2007.  Well, it happened again this year with Saturday Night Live – Mother Lover bringing in more traffic than the entire blog did in 2008.  Even without it in the equation, this year was still up, but boy did this post help out.  If you don’t know what the post is, just go and look, you’ll laugh.

revenge of the fallen logoTransformers Revenge of the Fallen Robot Pictures – Apparently when you can’t see the robots clearly in the movie, you turn to the Web for pictures of the robots so you know what the heck you were looking at.

47-Year-Old Susan Boyle Wows The Judges On Britain’s Got Talent – Ah, Susan Boyle.  She drove enough traffic to this site that I opened up SusanBoyleFandom.com.  She was an amazingly inspirational story, and said a lot about society and its perceptions.

Christine A. McCallumAnd We Have The First Teacher Sex Scandal Of 2009 – Christine McCallum had the dubious honor of being the first of many teacher sex scandals I wrote up in 2009.  It was a busy year for teachers that didn’t know how to behave themselves.

Who Is The Best Star Trek Captain – Proving once again that you can come to SeanPAune.com for answers to the questions that keep you up late at night.  My selection for the order of the captains wasn’t too popular, but that is my right as the owner of the site to say things that not everyone agrees with.

Teacher Arrested For Texting Naked Photos To Student – Christy Lynn Martin, a 32-year-old teacher from St. Petersburg, FL was arrested for texting a 14-year-old student with naked photos of herself.  She is the second teacher to win a place on my top 10 posts of the year.

Vince Shlomi, The Shamwow Guy, Arrested For Beating A Hooker – Yes, the Shamwow guy hits women … and this apparently interested a lot of people.

Teacher Sarah L. Tolzien Accused Of Sex With 16-Year-Old – The third teacher to make the list of top 10 posts.  I really wish there were no teacher sex scandals to write about to be honest.

Student Teacher Lindsay Massaro Arrested For Sex With An Eigth Grader – Yes, another teacher … scary isn’t it?

Deadliest Catch Season 5 Premiere Brings More Questions Than It Answers – After the season premiere of Deadliest Catch season 5, it really looked like one of the main boats had sunk.  Luckily the boat didn’t sink, but people sure were curious after the episode aired.

Did you have a favorite post of the year I did?

Justin Timberlake returned for his third time hosting Saturday Night Live, and, well, “Dick In A Box” got a sequel.

This is the first time Timberlake has returned to host since we got the infamous “Dick In A Box” sketch that caused such a stir.  I really didn’t know if they would try to do a follow-up, but try they did, and they succeeded, albeit in a different way. For whatever reason, Andy Samberg and Justin Timberlake seem to work together amazingly well, we’re just all lucky enough to enjoy the results.

Doing a direct follow-up probably would have been a disaster, but using the same characters in a totally different situation that is just as disturbing as the original turned out to be the way to go.  It seems the two have been in jail for five months, and they get out just in time for Mother’s Day and realize they haven’t gotten any gifts for them. Well, they come up with a plan that is best left to the video.

Yes, that was Susan Sarandon and Patricia Clarkson as their moms.

In case you’ve never seen the original, here it is via YouTube so any one in the world can watch it. Enjoy.

Can we just call this “The Breast That Wouldn’t Die“?

In what seems to be the longest ever conversation about a woman’s nipple, the 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals yesterday overturned the Federal Communications Council (FCC) $550,000 fine against CBS for the 2004 Janet Jackson nipple exposure during the Super Bowl.  Ars Technica has one of the bust summaries of what exactly the court said:

The court not only calls the new policy “arbitrary and capricious,” but held that CBS was not responsible for the actions of the dancers: Jackson and Justin Timberlake. “Both performers were acting as independent contractors for the limited purpose of providing entertainment services for one isolated, brief program,” the justices ruled.

In the end, the court ruled that CBS did its best to control Jackson and Timberlake’s performance within the context of its independent contractor relationship with the two performers. “When a broadcaster endeavors to exercise proper control, but ultimately fails, to prevent unscripted indecency, it will not have acted with scienter [knowledge of deliberate wrongdoing],” the justices argued, “if its actions were negligent rather than reckless.”

Needless to say, CBS is thrilled, the FCC, not so much.  The FCC will be sticking to their guns and attempting later this year to argue to the Supreme Court that they need tougher restrictions and even more indecency laws.  I would normally put a quote here, but it comes from an Associated Press story, and the AP is now looking to charge bloggers a $1.50 per word to quote them.  (no… I am not kidding)

Not one to be dissuaded by courts, the Parents Television Council (PTC) has waded in on this issue.  In a statement on their website, they claim that this ruling was an example of “activist judges across the country are making a mockery of Federal Broadcast Decency laws”.  Well, I’m not quite sure how the above listed judgment, which spelled out how they reached their decision that CBS was not at fault for the actions of third parties, equates to “activist judges”.  Oh, wait… does that mean they activated their brains and actually interperted the law?

Apparently “activist judge” has come to mean “any judge that makes a ruling I don’t like”.  While the incident was unfortunate, I’ve thought the fine was excessive since the day it was issued, and I have also thought the fining of CBS out of the whole mess was just silly.  MTV produced the show, the NFL approved it, CBS was merely the company to air it, they were not part of the production.  Never let something like facts get in the way of the PTC though and their fear mongering ways.   Hopefully the Supreme Court will keep it’s head when they look into the issue this year, but who knows what will happen.

Until then… “activist judges” for the win!
